Just about anyone who has experienced insomnia for an extended length of time wonders what causes insomnia.  This thought process takes place with the thinking that knowing the cause can lead to a cure.  Anyone who has suffered from chronic insomnia would happily pay almost any cost for such a cure.  The problem is that the cause of insomnia can vary from person to person.  For some people, the cause could be environmental and for others it could be dietary for example.  However, the key to getting at the cause is to start doing some detective work to determine what areas could be potential causes.  Here, are a few areas you should look at more closely:

1.  Environmental Factors

Environmental factors could be how you are currently using your bedroom.  Many people make the mistake of turning their bedroom into an area for all kinds of activities ranging from eating, watching tv, doing work, and more.  The problem here is the bedroom does not then foster a sleeping or quiet environment fo rest.  Simple changes can be made to your bedroom to help this issue like only sleeping in your bedroom and keeping the lights low.  Other environmental factors could be loud noises during the night such as nearby construction or it could be recent changes like a move.  For many people, it takes some time to adjust to new places.  If you have to travel a great deal, it is reasonable to expect that you may experience some insomnia because of your inability to give your body a common and constant place of rest.

2.  Diet Factors

These factors mainly center around what foods you are eating and drinking and when you are doing so.  If you are eating within a few hours of bedroom, you stand a good risk of waking up several times during the night.  By failing to give your body sufficient time to digest your food, you risk heartburn, acid reflux, and the need for later urination.  Not too mention issues like stomach ache and other lesser ailments.  Another consideration is what foods you are eating.  By avoiding heavy foods later in the day, you give your body more time to digest your food giving it less of a chance to disrupt your sleep.

3.  Physical Factors

This could be a physical ailment like a broken leg or other injury that makes it difficult for you to sleep in your preferred sleeping condition.  Many times, these types of issues can be helped by using various sleeping aids to make sleep easier.

4.  Stress Factors

Many people who suffer from insomnia have a high degree of stress.  This stress can come from work, relationships, or other sources.  However, the problem is that people fail to take measures to reduce this stress and it carries over into the night.  The result is many are unable to put their mind at rest and go to sleep.  Common ways to help reduce stress include physical exercise, yoga, prayer, or writing out your thoughts.  All of these have holistic benefits that allow you to release this stress making it easier to fall asleep at night.

By keeping these different causes in mind, you are far more likely to be able to pinpoint what causes insomnia in you or others.  The must important step is to be as honest as you can when going through different causes and to not be afraid to seek out additional help from message boards, counselors and friends.  Sleep loss is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly.  Getting a good night’s sleep can do wonders for improving your personal and work life.
